Launch a Career as a State Trooper

State troopers are law enforcement officers who enforce laws statewide and operate under the jurisdiction of a state law enforcement agency. While they focus primarily on traffic and motor vehicle laws on state highways, they often assist other law enforcement agencies with various other investigatory duties.

Degrees for State Troopers
Civil service regulations require state troopers to be U.S. citizens, at least 20 years of age and in excellent physical condition. While most state law enforcement agencies require state troopers to have only a high school diploma, others prefer a degree in criminal justice or law enforcement for promotion. State troopers must also complete an intense training program at a state academy, where they receive instruction constitutional law, civil rights, the use of firearms, first aid, emergency response and more.

State Trooper Training
State troopers are expected to protect the rights of the people in their jurisdiction and provide a safe environment for citizens. Although this responsibility can provide a strong sense of accomplishment and high job satisfaction, law enforcement work can be extremely dangerous and stressful. State troopers will be expected to regularly perform the following duties:

  • Enforce traffic laws
  • Investigate accidents
  • Respond to emergencies
  • Conduct highway maintenance and safety checks
  • Raise community awareness through the distribution of educational materials

Job competition in state law enforcement agencies is expected to be high over the next decade, with precedence given to applicants with a military background or degree in police science.
